While searching for the body, a New York Times identity card was found among the documents on Renaud’s body, leading to reports he worked for the paper. The New York Times came up with a statement after the incident, stating that Brent Renaud was a contributor to the publication. However, he was not on the publication’s assignment in Ukraine, the New York Times stated in a statement.

As per the New York Times statement, “We are deeply saddened after hearing about Brent Renaud’s death. Renaud was a talented filmmaker who had contributed to the New York Times for years. Although he had several contributions to The Times in the past (most recently in 2015), he was not on assignment for any desk at The Times in Ukraine.”

The statement further added that, “Early reports that he had worked for Times circulated as he was wearing a Times press badge that had been issued for an assignment many years ago.”

Inna Sovsun, a Member of Ukraine’s Parliament, claimed that the Russian forces killed the journalist, Brent Renaud.
