The counter-intelligence of the Security Service conducted a multi-stage special operation to neutralize the agent network of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation (known as GRU) in Kharkiv Oblast.
As a result of operational measures, one of the most conspiratorial agents of the enemy group was detained. He collected intelligence about the defense of the regional center and border areas of the region.
The other three agents from this group were exposed by SBU employees in August 2022 and in February this year. Among them was a “liaison” of military intelligence of the Russian Federation.
Currently, the detainee is a 52-year-old resident of Kharkiv, who was recruited by the Russian game at the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
On the instructions of the aggressor, he spied on the temporary bases of Ukrainian defenders who are involved in the defense of the eastern borders of Ukraine.
First of all, he was interested in the number of personnel, the available weapons and the exact coordinates of the units of the Armed Forces and the State Border Service.
He also recorded the directions of movement of Ukrainian military equipment and the location of fortified areas and fortifications in the region.
To do this, he traveled around the area and covertly photographed Ukrainian objects related to the area.
He transmitted the information he received through a messenger to a representative of Russian military intelligence who was on the territory of the Russian Federation.
To hide the “traces” of correspondence with the aggressor, the traitor immediately deleted all messages sent to the game.
However, the counterintelligence agents of the Security Service still exposed and documented the subversive activities of the Russian agent.
On the basis of the collected evidence, SBU investigators notified the perpetrator of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed under martial law).
He is currently in custody. An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. The perpetrator faces life imprisonment.
The special operation was carried out by SBU employees in the Kharkiv region together with the State Border Service under the procedural guidance of the Kharkiv regional prosecutor’s office.
