Marcella Liburd JP have finally taken oath on Tuesday, January 31st at Government House, Springfield, Basseterre, St Kitts as the Governor General of Saint Kitts and Nevis. It is also considered as the historic moment for the Federation as she will be the first female Governor General.
Liburd has succeeded Sir S.W. Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, KC, JP, LL.D.
Notably, in the past, she has served twin-island Federation in several capacities, as a teacher, Senator, lawyer, Deputy Speaker, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Cabinet Minister of the Federal Government.
It is also to be mentioned that Marcella Liburd has obtained her Bachelor of Laws with honours in the year of 1992 from the Norman Manley Law School (NMLS), where she has continued her education, making a Legal Education Certificate from NMLS in 1994.
Moreover, she was called to the Saint Kitts & Nevis Bar of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (SC) in 1994. Liburd has served as Senator and Deputy Speaker of the Saint Kitts & Nevis National Assembly for the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) Administration before getting appointed in 2004 as Speaker of the National Assembly. She served in that capacity until 2008.
Although, Liburd has served as the Minister of Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture as well as Gender Affairs, & acted as Prime Minister on occasion.
Marcella Liburd has piloted multiple legislations over the years including the Domestic Violence Act & Equal Pay Act. In 2011, Liburd was nominated among famous women for her assistance to the gender equality development.
In 2013, Marcella Liburd has become the first female to be elected as the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Chairperson in its then 81-year history & in 2018 she became the 1st female Deputy National Leader of the Saint Kitts-Nevis Labour Party.
Marcella Liburd has also served as the Governor-General’s Deputy on Thursday, September 15th 2022.
Her appointment by King Charles III is historic as she became first female Governor General of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis.
