In 2018, the Royole FlexPai was introduced by a Chinese display maker that was never known before, and it managed to make its way in the tech world. A smartphone with a big, flexible 7.8-inch AMOLED display that can fold and unfold like a book. When reviewers and customers got to test the phone, it proved that the technology was not up to the mark. The FlexPai was neither attractive nor strong, making sounds when opened and closed, which needed some effort to do so, and it came with an old Android 9 experience.
Even with all the defects, the FlexPai was enough to make everyone believe in the future of cellphones. It was not only normal users that noticed it, huge smartphone companies also liked the concept of folding phones. After Royole FlexPai became famous, it was expected that everyone will start production. When a small business creates a new concept but fails to provide it, then the bigger companies take the concept and create a better and more usable product for the market. It happened exactly like that.
Only a year after FlexPai came up, Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold in March 2019 and released it in the market six months later. A few people said that it was still a concept than a final product. Mostly because it broke with simple daily usage. The Galaxy Fold was a bit advanced than the Royole.
After that, Samsung launched an advanced Galaxy Fold edition known as the “Galaxy Z Fold”, while other companies such as the Huawei Mate Xs and the Motorola Razr, stepped into creating a foldable phone market with their own models. An Apple foldable iPhone may be in the development phase, and Xiaomi, along with other firms such as Honor and TCL, has been secretly making a number of foldable phones models.
All the rest of the phone manufacturers will step into this concept and create a folding phone, need to make unique and different than Samsung taking over the folding phone market and create consumer interest. And Google is also stepping in.
With many leaks, Google will make its next flagship the Pixel 6 public on October 19, 2021. The leaks also show what to expect. However, there have been leaks that Google’s first foldable smartphone and a direct competitor to the Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Google Pixel Fold may also be shown at the future event. Unlike the Pixel 6, the Google Pixel Fold hasn’t been leaked to anything, there’s not much known other than a few designs pictures, which may or may not be what it will actually look like.
Aside from the design, the Pixel Fold is interesting because no company is more common with or in charge of Android than Google. In order to face Samsung’s leading Z Fold 3, Google may launch some exceptional features for its own foldable phone. It is required to outstand its rivals.
We can only speculate on what features the Pixel Fold will offer this time, but hopefully not for long. The Pixel 6 event is almost near.
