MOSCOW, August 30, 2024 — Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it had detained two Colombian nationals on suspicion of participating as mercenaries in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The detentions, which have garnered international attention, come as tensions continue to mount in the war-torn region.
The suspects, identified as Jose Aron Medina and Alexander Ante, were apprehended following a Moscow court’s decision on Wednesday to place them in pre-trial detention.
According to court documents, the two men will remain in custody until at least October 22, pending further investigation. If convicted of engaging in mercenary activities, both men could face prison sentences of up to 15 years.
The FSB has not provided specific details regarding the circumstances of their detention. However, reports in Colombian media suggest that Medina and Ante may have been captured in Venezuela while attempting to return to Colombia from Ukraine.

A video released by the Russian state-run RIA Novosti news agency shows photos of the two Colombian nationals dressed in Ukrainian military uniforms. Subsequent footage depicts Medina and Ante in prison attire, being interrogated by Russian authorities.
The video has sparked concern over the treatment and legal process the men will face in Russia, where cases involving alleged mercenaries are often closely tied to state narratives about the war in Ukraine.
The detentions highlight a growing phenomenon of foreign nationals joining the conflict in Ukraine, often on opposing sides.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, thousands of international volunteers have enlisted to fight, with many joining Ukraine’s defense forces.
Russian broadcaster RTVI recently estimated that at least 90 Colombian nationals have been killed while fighting for Ukraine since the onset of the conflict.
