Russia’s Defense Ministry reported significant interceptions of Ukrainian drones targeting the Crimean peninsula. The ministry confirmed early Thursday that their air defense systems had successfully neutralized 33 aerial drones, while forces in the Black Sea intercepted and destroyed an additional 10 naval drones aimed towards Crimea.
The Defense Ministry’s statement highlighted the effectiveness of their air defense systems in thwarting what they described as a coordinated attack on Crimea. Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev of Sevastopol earlier linked loud noises in the Crimean port city to the Russian army’s defense against what he termed “an attempted attack by a surface drone.”
Separately, in Russia’s Bryansk region, authorities reported the downing of two drones overnight. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties were reported as a result of these incidents.
The escalation comes amidst increased hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, with Ukraine allegedly intensifying its attacks on Russian territory since the beginning of the year. Ukrainian forces have targeted energy sites deemed crucial for supplying the Russian military, as well as towns and villages in Crimea and near the border.
Tensions in the region have remained high since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, a move widely condemned by Western nations but supported by Moscow. The peninsula’s status has been a flashpoint in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine.
