A short History
Originated on the central Asiatic steppes around 700 BC, the Portuguese Water Dog is an ancient breed. It is not yet confirmed whether the Berbers, also known as Moors or Goths, have taken them to Portugal.
However, the latter could have some reality as the dogs of Ostrogoths further became poodle, which has some common characteristics with Portuguese.
The dogs were famous for herding fish into nets and had great power to tackle the fell overboard. With the decline in fishing in the early 20th century, the breed had suffered a lot, but Portuguese fisherman Dr Vasco Bensuade have made efforts to save the animal in the 1930s. In the rare breed exchange programme held in the United States, two Portuguese Water Dogs entered in 1958.
