As per Cindra Delgado, owner of Cindel Portuguese Water Dogs,” The animal is an ultimate Velcro dog and follow you everywhere”.

The incredible animal is fun-loving, always want to please everyone, and is considered the ideal dog for families. With his great intelligence and deep compassion, the dog is suitable to excel as a therapy and service dog.

Moreover, the remarkable ability and stamina make the animal a spectacular athletic swimmer and driver. He assisted his master in the sea by rescuing gear and broken nets and was also helpful in herding schools of fish and carrying messages between boats and to the shore.

A short History

Originated on the central Asiatic steppes around 700 BC, the Portuguese Water Dog is an ancient breed. It is not yet confirmed whether the Berbers, also known as Moors or Goths, have taken them to Portugal.

However, the latter could have some reality as the dogs of Ostrogoths further became poodle, which has some common characteristics with Portuguese.

The dogs were famous for herding fish into nets and had great power to tackle the fell overboard. With the decline in fishing in the early 20th century, the breed had suffered a lot, but Portuguese fisherman Dr Vasco Bensuade have made efforts to save the animal in the 1930s. In the rare breed exchange programme held in the United States, two Portuguese Water Dogs entered in 1958.

With that, the popularity of the Water Dog among the people grew. On January 1, 1984, American Kennel Club accepted the Water Dogs in their working group due to his excellency and obedience.
