As Russia is taking an entry into the twelfth day of full-scale military operation, a senior and influential economist Stephen Roach said only one person in the world could influence Vladimir Putin, and he is Chinese Xi Jinping.

During an interview, Roach said, “There’s only one person in the world, I think, who has influence over Vladimir Putin, and that is Chinese President Xi Jinping.”

He said, “I mean, China is actually holding the trump card here, and I think it is up to Xi to seize this moment.”

Stephen Roach is a senior official at Yale University’s Jackson Institute of Global Affairs & a Senior Lecturer at Yale’s School of Management. He was former Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia & the firm’s Chief Economist for the bulk of his 30-year career at Morgan Stanley, heading up a highly regarded team of economists around the globe.

Meanwhile, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after what Ukrainian authorities have defined as increased shelling of surrounded cities and another failed attempt to start taking out hundreds of thousands of civilians from the encircled areas, including the southern port of Mariupol.

Russia has made an announcement yet another cease-fire & humanitarian corridors to permit civilians to flee Ukraine for Monday, but nothing has happened so far. Two previous cease-fire attempts have failed, & Russian forces continue to hit Ukrainian cities with rockets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for an international boycott of all Russian products — including oil — ahead of the third round of talks between Russian and Ukrainian leaders planned for Monday.

More than 1.7 million Ukrainians had been pushed from the nation. Zelenskyy advised his people to keep resisting, & Ukraine’s foreign minister said more than 20,000 people from 52 nations had volunteered to fight in Ukraine’s newly created international legion.
