The cyber specialist officers of the Security Service of Ukraine has nabbed two Russian agents who were targeting the Russian air attacks on Kyiv on the midnight of September 21, 2023. The details about the above mentioned has been shared by the Security Service of Ukraine via their official social media handle.
As per the details shared by the SBU, “The main targets of the Russian attacks were the capital’s life support facilities, including energy-generating enterprises. Two local residents who worked for the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Soviet Union were involved in the pointing of Russian missiles at Kyiv.”
Notably, they came to the attention of the military intelligence of the Russian Federation due to their anti-Ukrainian posts on social networking sites, which were distributed after the start of the full-scale invasion.
According to the reports, “Then a representative of the Russia remotely recruited both men and tasked them with collecting intelligence on the territory of Kyiv. On the instructions of the Russian special service, the agents monitored the bases and movements of the Defense Forces in the capital region. To do this, they went out into the streets and secretly recorded the locations of Ukrainian defenders. Also, those involved in the “dark” used their acquaintances, from whom they asked for “necessary” information under the guise of everyday conversations.”
In addition, the Russian agents have also sent their Russian curator photos and geolocations of strategically important energy infrastructure facilities.
Whereas, for the purpose of transmitting the information, the suspects used a messenger, and to disguise the sessions of communication, they created several anonymous accounts.
For each completed task, the convicts received money from the Russian Federation, which was transferred to their bank cards from anonymous payers.
During searches of the residences of both suspects, mobile phones were seized, which they used to photograph Ukrainian objects and correspond with the Russian agencies. Bank cards were also found, on which Russian agents received funds from their curator from the game.
So far, the investigators of the Security Service have notified both detainees of the suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 28 and Part 2 of Art. 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed by a group of persons under martial law according to a prior conspiracy).
The perpetrators are in custody. They face life imprisonment.
