The counter-intelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine has nabbed another Russian informant who is working for the special services in Chernihiv Oblast. The SBU has nabbed him on the charges of gathering intelligence on Ukrainian troops and vital infrastructure in the border regions.
It is to be noted that, the details about the above mentioned has been shared by the Security Service of Ukraine via their official social media handle, adding that, “the informant was interested in information about the location of checkpoints, the number of personnel, the presence of military equipment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the construction of military aviation facilities in the region.”
“Also, the intruder drew diagrams of local railway routes, along which cargo echelons run. In addition, the person involved, on the instructions of the Russian special services, collected information about the objects of the energy infrastructure of the regional center,” shares by SBU.
The details further revealed that, “Intelligence information was needed by the occupiers to prepare a new series of air attacks on the region.”
It is to be added that, SBU employees recorded the perpetrator’s actions and detained him at his place of residence. During the search, a mobile phone was recovered in the detainee’s possession, which he used to communicate with the officials.
According to the investigation, the Russian informant is a local resident who, during the occupation of part of the region, came into the view of the invaders due to his pro-Kremlin views.
Subsequently, the Russian informant began to carry out the tasks, which he reported to his officers back in Russia through an anonymous chat. To cover up his criminal activities, he immediately deleted all messages after each session of communication with the occupiers.
However, this did not help – SBU employees collected a reasonable evidence base on the suspect and informed him of the suspicion under Art. 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorized dissemination of information about the transfer, transfer of weapons, armaments and military supplies to Ukraine, the movement, transfer or placement of the Armed Forces).
He is currently in custody. An investigation is ongoing to establish all the circumstances of the crime. The perpetrator faces up to 12 years in prison.
Counter-subversive measures were carried out by SBU employees in Chernihiv region under the procedural guidance of the regional prosecutor’s office.
